Taking the idea of a “Kayaking Trip to Find Yourself” to a very visceral level, Alone With the Deep is a tightly-focused, 3D, single-player game of kayaking and cold-water diving in the Canadian Rockies that unravels into a tale of personal and cosmic horror. Rendered in beautiful detail in Unreal Engine 5, our goal is to create a focused, immersive, and punchy horror experience around 8-12 hours long that hooks players with personal stakes, cerebral mysteries, and escalating supernatural peril.

Kinbasket Lake

This hidden gem is a reservoir on the Columbia River and spans 260 km. When the Mica Dam was built in 1973, the valley and previous townships and logging camps were flooded with water, lost beneath the tranquil surface. The water levels can drastically vary depending on the month but it has great fishing for bull trout, ling cod, rainbow, kokanee, and whitefish. To this day, it is accessed by forestry roads off the Trans-Canada Highway 1, west of Golden. It is highly recommended to take a radio and call your kilometers on logging roads around Golden as many of them are active.

We’re aiming for engaging, easy to grasp gameplay that marries the excitement and freedom of underwater exploration (as in games like Subnautica or Abzu) with the fear of what lies below (as in games like Soma or Death in the Water 2). The core loop is travelling by kayak to new areas, diving in, exploring, encountering oddities, and returning to the kayak with new information only to hurry to the next safe island to camp for the night.

The player’s boat is their lifeline. It’s their safety, and freedom to travel. We’ll let them customize their kayak’s colour, shape, weathering, etc. to make it feel like their own. Their home…
